Combining Social Media to Produce New Services (Mash ups)

In week 7 we discussed mash ups, the main features of which are combination visualization and aggregation. We used Google mapping to explore this technique.

Designing & Presenting Content Effectively via Social Media

In week five, we explored the various area's of designing and presenting material through social media, it was very engaging material due to the visually stimulating nature of the content. We focused on using Prezi Lab Pathfinder, this was very useful and will likely feature in my group project.

Social Bookmarking and Tagging

During week four in class we discussed social bookmarking and tagging. For our e-lab tutorial we set up and learnt how to use pinterest and diigo. These are two useful and interesting social bookmarking websites.

MIT app inventor - Magic 8ball

For this tutorial our goal was to make a app that mimics a magic 8 ball. It was a fun task and very helpful in learning some of the more complex aspects of the blocks section.

MIT Inventor Tutorial 1

In week two we had our first look at the MIT inventor website, this is a website that allows to build program's and test app’s. It was really interesting, I thought at first building an app would be extremely difficult but the step by step instructions provided were very clear to understand and the whole process was very enjoyable. For this tutorial we designed an app called hello purr, it was a picture of a cat then when the screen was touched the cat would purr. In the design section we created what the user would be presented with on the screen the image of the cat and locations of the buttons etc. then on the blocks section we programmed the app through coding to make it actually work. This reminded me of designing a flow chart to program a 555 transistor circuit at leaving cert level.

Social Media Experiment

In week one Shane asked us to try going a full day without using social media, this proved to extremely challenging. It was a shock to find out how I use social media in so many area's. I reverted to using texting which help deal with a lot of the communication problems, but I ran into trouble when some of my friends in college had no credit, I was unable to reach them for the day. The temptations to go on Facebook or look at snapchat proved to be very difficult towards the end of the day,    when i was relaxing at home with not much to take my mind off it.
